At Belgrade’s “Nikola Tesla” airport, work has begun on projects related to environmentally sustainable development and business. The goal is to reduce the impact of the airport on the environment in terms of harmful gas emissions, wastewater flows and solid waste, as well as to improve the energy policy of the system with the use of renewable and more efficient energy sources.
According to the company Belgrade Airport, which manages the “Nikola Tesla” airport as a concessionaire, the construction of a new energy plant for the production and distribution of heat and electricity is underway, and the completion of works is expected at the end of 2021.
This project will enable the transition from heavy fuels to more environmentally efficient energy sources and the reduction of harmful gas emissions.
In addition, the preparation of technical documentation for the construction of a solar power plant is underway, which will begin in mid-2021.
Work is also underway to resolve the issue of waste at the airport, so the construction of a solid waste management plant in the public zone of the airport is already underway, and this year the start of work on the construction of a solid waste processing plant in the airport’s restricted zone is planned.
In addition, the airport plans to build a wastewater treatment plant, as well as introduce a new water reuse system.
When it comes to expanding the airport’s capacity, Belgrade Airport told eKapija that most of the major works will be completed in the next three years, but that the reconstruction will mark this year in a visual and operational sense.
They add that for the end of the first quarter of this year, it is planned to start the construction of a new platform for defrosting and preventing icing on an area of about 25,500 square meters.
The operator of the Nikola Tesla Airport reminds that preparatory works are underway for the construction of an inserted 3,500 m runway, as well as the construction of new taxiways, some of which will be designed as taxiways for quick exit of aircraft from the runway, which, they say from the company, have not existed so far in the air traffic system in Serbia.
Furthermore, in the first part of this year, the reconstruction of access roads, construction of new parking lots, upgrading and reorganization of lanes and complete reconfiguration of the access plateau in front of the passenger terminal will begin, and the plan is to complete works and open a long-term parking lot at Belgrade Airport.
At the end of January, the renovation and modernization of the entire central zone for the stay of passengers before boarding the flight was completed, which lasted for five months and cost more than 2 million euros, Nova Ekonomija reports.
