Less than two years remain until Belgrade hosts the specialized exhibition Expo 2027, marking a significant transformation for the city. Construction of a new pier on the Sava River, stretching from Ušće to the Branko Bridge, is underway to accommodate large cruise ships. City manager Miroslav Čučković told RTS that the pier will enable more than 5,000 tourists to disembark daily.
Čučković emphasized that Belgrade aims to present itself as a major global center during Expo 2027, which carries the theme “Play for humanity, play for life.” The city expects to welcome approximately four million visitors, and preparations are focused on ensuring smooth transportation for all attendees.
Recent expansions to the airport, as well as the main bus and railway stations, will support the increased visitor capacity. New public transport routes are also being developed, including specialized 25-meter-long buses with two accordion sections, designed to shuttle visitors from the National Stadium railway station to the Expo site, which is about 1.4 kilometers away.
Clarifying ongoing infrastructure projects, Čučković noted that restoration works are planned for the Old Railway Bridge—located between Gazela and Branko bridges—not the Old Sava Bridge. The bridge will undergo sandblasting, steel structure protection, and paving to enable safe passage for cyclists, scooter users, and rollerbladers between Belgrade’s old and new parts.
Regarding the Sava pier, Goran Puzović, director of Srbijavoda, stated that the first phase of cleaning the 1,600-meter section is expected to be completed by late September, with full completion targeted for November or December. Plans include four modern piers and the creation of pedestrian and bicycle paths.
Additionally, a new six-kilometer service road will be constructed from Block 45 to the Expo site. This road will separate pedestrians and cyclists from heavy traffic and connect Block 45 directly to the Gazela Bridge, enhancing safety and accessibility.
