After it was announced that around 900 workers at the “Benetton” factory in Niš will lose their jobs as the plant shuts down, local authorities in the city promised assistance, but no concrete help has been provided so far. What is certain is that the workers will be declared redundant, which means they are entitled to severance pay and unemployment benefits according to the law.

Niš Mayor Dragoslav Pavlović reassured that the situation would be resolved, but did not specify how or whether any factories have offered to hire some of the workers.

April is approaching, and it is during this month that employees at the Niš “Benetton” factory will officially be declared redundant and become unemployed. The Mayor stated that he met with representatives from “Benetton,” who confirmed that they would comply with the law and provide severance pay.

The city is preparing programs through the National Employment Service, where these workers will be able to apply for their rights and receive support in finding new jobs. However, the Mayor’s previous hope that local factories would offer jobs to those losing their positions has yet to materialize, with no mention of specific companies willing to take them in.

After 14 years of operation, the Italian company’s Niš facility will close, with production expected to end in April. This closure is part of a broader trend, as “Benetton” has been forced to shut down plants globally due to financial difficulties.
