Construction of South Bypass around Valjevo and tunnel works progress on Miloš Veliki highway

The construction of the South Bypass around Valjevo, which spans 2.2 kilometers, is expected to begin shortly after the completion of the remaining sections of the Iverak-Lajkovac expressway. According to recent announcements, the full connection of Valjevo with the Miloš Veliki highway is expected to be ready in just a few weeks. This connection, along with the remaining stretch of the Iverak-Lajkovac expressway, will mark the first new kilometers of highway to be opened to traffic in 2025. Officials from ‘Roads of Serbia’ have stated that the works are now finished, and this development will help connect Valjevo with the highway and the rest of Serbia, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and international corridors. This, in turn, is expected to improve living standards for the local population and open new opportunities for economic growth in the region.

“The upcoming work includes the installation of horizontal and vertical signage, guardrails, and lighting, particularly for the roundabout where the southern ring road will be constructed. Additionally, lighting works are planned for the roundabout area in Popučke,” said Predrag Milanović, technical project manager for the Iverak-Lajkovac expressway.

The Iverak-Lajkovac expressway spans 18.3 kilometers, and its design allows for speeds up to 100 kilometers per hour, with two lanes in each direction. The project includes over 20 structures, such as bridges and overpasses. Construction began in June 2020, with China Shandong as the main contractor. To date, 12.4 kilometers have already been opened to traffic, and authorities expect the remaining 5.8 kilometers, including the Divci-Valjevo loop, to be completed within the next few weeks.

Work on Munjino Brdo tunnel

To the south, on the Miloš Veliki highway, construction of the Munjino Brdo tunnel continues, despite the cold temperatures. Work on the secondary substructure and the installation of cable channels in the right tunnel tube is nearing completion.

“Currently, the surface is being prepared for the application of protective paint on the walls of the secondary substructure above the footpaths. In the left tunnel tube, which was broken through on December 24, work continues on the primary substructure, foot vaults, and the construction of the secondary substructure, along with the construction of transverse connecting channels,” explained Vladimir Petrović, head of supervision at the Construction Institute “CPL.”

The left tunnel tube, which is 2,755 meters long, took longer to break through than originally planned. According to the contractor, work is progressing according to the planned schedule, with no significant issues. The Munjino Brdo tunnel is located along the section of the Miloš Veliki highway connecting Pakovrač and Požega.

“Once the construction work in the tunnel reaches a stage where it does not interfere with the installation of electro-mechanical equipment, the installation process will begin. All necessary equipment for the Munjino Brdo tunnel has already been purchased and is stored in warehouses. After the completion of the main phase of works on the secondary substructure and road construction, we will begin installing the electro-mechanical equipment and automatic control systems,” said Petrović.

The Miloš Veliki highway is a critical road connecting the Moravian and Zlatibor regions in western Serbia. The most intensive construction work is currently taking place between Pakovrač and Požega, with the expectation that this section will be open to traffic by Vidovdan.
