The Ministry of Mining and Energy announced that construction of the desulfurization system at TENT B is nearly finished, with all construction work complete and testing of individual components in progress.
The first successful release of flue gases and limestone suspension was conducted through absorber B1, with similar tests planned for absorber B2 in mid-August.
Over €400 million has been invested in desulfurization plants at TENT A and TENT B, marking one of the largest environmental projects undertaken by the Electric Power Industry of Serbia (EPS). Last year, the system at TENT A was completed, and both plants are expected to significantly improve environmental protection and public health in Obrenovac and surrounding areas.
Milan Aleksić, advisor to the Minister, highlighted the importance of these systems for extending the operational life of Serbia’s key thermal power plants. TENT B’s desulfurization system is expected to enter trial operation by the end of the year.
EPS General Director Dušan Živković noted that with these systems installed on all major EPS thermal power plants—including Kostolac B and TENT A—the company will fully comply with European and domestic environmental standards.
A recent “hot test” involving absorber B1 confirmed the technological process is functioning, with white smoke from the chimney indicating proper operation. Fine-tuning continues, with trial operation expected by mid-December.
An added benefit of the project is the production of gypsum as a by-product, which can be used in construction, supporting the circular economy.
