The EC is finalizing its report on Serbia, but there is no decision yet on recommending to the European Council to make the country a membership candidate.

This is also true when it comes to any decision to give Serbia a date for the beginning of accession negotiations, Tanjug news agency said it learned in Brussels.

The analysis of information and documents obtained from various sources, including the Serbian government and NGOs, is underway, the cabinet of European Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule has stated.

As for the decision on whether Serbia will obtain the date for the start of accession talks, Fule’s cabinet said that there are those who believe Serbia deserves it, noting, however, that the decision has not yet been made.

In that context, Fule’s cabinet neither confirmed, nor denied the media reports that the EC would recommend that Serbia should be given a conditional date for the start of accession talks.

The cabinet stated that the EC is preparing a so-called ‘enlargement package’ which envisages an enlargement strategy, and that Serbia will obtain a separate opinion, because the European Council requested so from the EC.

The Podgorica-based daily Vijesti reported Monday that the EC is preparing an enlargement package that the commissioners will discuss on Tuesday, which envisages that Croatia should sign the Treaty of Accession, that Serbia should obtain candidacy, and that Montenegro and Macedonia should start negotiations.

Spokesperson of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Maja Kocijancic did not wish to comment on these claims, adding that the preparation of the EC’s report is underway, and that she cannot disclose any details about it at this point.
