As of October 1, electricity prices in Serbia have increased by 6.6% for households and small customers, according to the Energy Agency of the Republic of Serbia (AERS). The new average price applies to all customers under regulated tariffs, reflecting higher access fees for transmission and distribution systems.
Additionally, the threshold between the red and blue consumption zones has been lowered from 1,600 kWh to 1,200 kWh, which could raise the average cost for regulated customers by up to 1.9%. As a result, many Serbian households are now adopting energy-saving practices to reduce their electricity bills, especially those relying on electric heating.
Marko Filipović, an expert from the USAID project “Better Energy”, advised citizens to use electricity more efficiently according to their actual needs. He recommended operating appliances such as washing machines and water heaters during off-peak hours, when electricity is up to three times cheaper. He added that applying energy efficiency measures in residential buildings can save up to 40% of total energy consumption.
According to Filipović, around 70% of household electricity is used for heating, cooling, and household appliances. He suggested simple habits such as using pot lids when cooking and switching to LED lighting, which can reduce lighting-related consumption by up to 80%, especially when combined with motion sensors.
Off-peak electricity hours in Serbia
Off-peak (cheaper) electricity periods differ by region:
- Vojvodina: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Belgrade: 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM
- Central Serbia: 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM
Discounts on electricity bills
Starting with October bills, Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) offers several discount programs for households:
- 7% discount for those who switch to e-billing and pay by the 20th of the month.
- 6% discount for customers who self-report meter readings and pay by the 20th.
- 5% traditional discount for payments made by the 28th of the month.
EPS notes that only one discount can be applied per household, and customers can choose the option that best suits them.
