A new production facility for technical monoammonium phosphate (tMAP 12-61) has officially begun operations at Elixir Group’s Industrial ChemPark Prahovo in Serbia, marking the start of deliveries of this high-value fertilizer to European markets. The first shipments have already left the plant, with trucks transporting the product to customers across Europe.
The facility represents an important step toward strengthening European supply security for technical monoammonium phosphate, a key fertilizer component widely used in modern agriculture. Local production at Prahovo will help shorten delivery times and reduce dependence on imports for European markets.
The project is the result of a strategic partnership between Serbia’s Elixir Group and the German fertilizer producer K+S Group. The collaboration brings together Elixir’s industrial infrastructure and production expertise with K+S’s international distribution network.
Under the partnership structure, Elixir Group constructed the new production plant together with storage facilities and supporting infrastructure, while K+S will distribute the fertilizer through its global sales network, focusing primarily on markets in Europe, Eastern Europe and India. The project represents the first industrial cooperation between K+S and a partner in this part of Europe.
The new crystal fertilizer plant at Prahovo is also notable for its use of modern energy-efficient production technology, positioning the facility among the most advanced installations of its kind in Europe. The project reflects a broader shift in the fertilizer industry toward greater efficiency, specialty products and more sustainable production processes, as agriculture faces increasing pressure from climate change, soil degradation and rising global food demand.
By producing high-purity crystalline fertilizers, the Prahovo facility aims to serve modern agricultural systems that rely on precise nutrient management and efficient water use. The plant will produce soluMAP, K+S’s fully water-soluble tMAP fertilizer containing 12 percent nitrogen and 61 percent P₂O₅.
This product is specifically designed for fertigation and foliar application, making it particularly suitable for high-value fruit and vegetable cultivation. In fertigation systems — where nutrients are delivered directly to plants through irrigation — fertilizers are applied “drop by drop”, allowing crops to absorb nutrients more efficiently and improving both yields and product quality.
Demand for crystalline fertilizers such as tMAP has grown rapidly in recent years as agriculture increasingly adopts precision irrigation technologies, greenhouse cultivation and intensive horticulture. These fertilizers are also finding applications beyond agriculture, with rising demand as a specialty raw material in several industrial sectors.
For Elixir Group, the new plant significantly expands the role of Elixir Prahovo within the European fertilizer market. The facility places the Serbian industrial complex among the continent’s producers of advanced crystalline fertilizers, strengthening the country’s position in the regional agro-industrial supply chain.
The successful launch of production reflects the coordinated effort of engineering, technical and operational teams from both companies, including the on-site leadership team headed by Nemanja Tošković, who oversaw project execution and the transition from construction to operational production.
With the first deliveries already underway, the Prahovo plant is expected to become an important supplier of high-quality crystalline fertilizers for European agriculture, supporting more efficient crop production while reinforcing regional fertilizer supply resilience.
