Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) announced that citizens of Nova Varoš, Priboj, and Prijepolje have shown strong support for the construction of the reversible hydroelectric power plant (RHPP) “Bistrica” during public consultations. The project is expected to significantly contribute to economic development, tourism, infrastructure improvements, and encourage the return of skilled young professionals to the region.

During a two-day consultation in Nova Varoš, local authorities, NGOs, residents and other stakeholders were informed about the technical details, environmental impact studies, and social aspects of the project. The community expressed readiness to support land expropriation necessary for the project’s realization.

The “Bistrica” RHPP, with an approximate capacity of 650 megawatts, aims to provide greater stability and flexibility to Serbia’s power system, improve balancing capabilities, and enhance the integration of renewable energy sources.

Significant progress has been made in project documentation, including the completion of the conceptual design, adoption of spatial planning documentation, and drafting of the environmental impact assessment.

EPS is actively working on securing project financing and collaborating closely with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which is assisting with technical evaluation and the financing approval process.
