At the Kopaonik Business Forum, Dušan Živković, the General Director of Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), shared that Serbia currently has around 1,000 megawatts of electricity from independent producers using renewable energy sources. He also emphasized that EPS is looking to explore the potential of hydrogen, biomass, and geothermal energy in the future.

Živković spoke during the panel on the green energy transition, highlighting the rapidly changing global energy landscape, noting that 55% of the world’s GDP is now dependent on resource exploitation.

He remarked that energy companies play a key role in this transformation, alongside the broader economy’s participation in reducing the CO2 footprint. “It won’t be easy, but what is crucial is that we are already experiencing this shift today. The awareness of citizens and the economy is changing,” Živković stated. He explained that Serbia currently has around 800 MW of independent renewable energy producers, with an additional near-200 MW power plant in Pančevo, bringing the total to almost 1,000 MW from independent sources.

Živković further discussed how the energy landscape in Serbia is evolving, with prosumers and independent producers becoming an increasingly significant part of the energy mix. He also addressed how EPS plans to monitor this development in the coming years. The company already has approximately 3,000 MW of hydroelectric capacity, and through upcoming projects such as RHE Bistrica, EPS aims to further expand its renewable energy output.

Looking forward, Živković emphasized EPS’s commitment to renewable energy development, including its interest in hydrogen as a potential energy source. Additionally, the company intends to focus on advancing biomass and geothermal energy, among other possibilities. He concluded by stating that EPS is committed to transforming the company in line with these emerging energy trends.
