Dušan Borovčanin, the director of EXPO 2027 Belgrade, recently emphasized the global significance of the EXPO, which serves as an exhibition of culture, tradition, innovation and science. He stressed that EXPO is not just a fair, but an event where countries come together to address important themes set by the host. “Serbia is well-positioned among EXPO member countries. We earned the highest points, even alongside powerful nations like the United States, Argentina, Spain, and Thailand. These countries competed fiercely to host EXPO 2027, which highlights the importance of the event. Serbia is the only country to have succeeded, opening up new opportunities for the region not just for 2027, but for decades to come,” Borovčanin remarked.
Borovčanin explained that EXPO is a monumental event, attracting more than 4 million visitors from over 120 countries and international organizations. He hopes that visitors will not only leave with unforgettable memories and a desire to return as tourists, but that the event will also foster new collaborations across various fields, especially in science, technology, and service industries.
While addressing the cost of organizing the EXPO, Borovčanin stated that the 1.2 billion euro investment for EXPO 2027 in Belgrade is relatively modest compared to previous events. This investment, he explained, will serve as a foundation for a post-2027 legacy, with a new city rising in Surčin, an expanded Belgrade Fair, and a vibrant hub for music, sports, and innovation. “A new museum complex will attract both local citizens and tourists, and we are creating the infrastructure to host world-class events like international congresses, conferences, and entertainment activities,” he added.
Borovčanin acknowledged that there is still some uncertainty among the public about what EXPO actually represents and how it benefits Serbia, particularly since this is the first time the event will be held in the Western Balkans. He cited the fact that Paris has hosted EXPO six times, the USA four times, and London and Barcelona twice, highlighting that EXPOs have historically resulted in the creation of iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Crystal Palace in London, and the Atomium in Brussels.
He also pointed out that the last EXPO in Dubai led to diplomatic relations being established that would have taken decades to achieve otherwise, underscoring the significance of these events. Borovčanin urged citizens to learn more about EXPO 2027 to better understand its potential impact on Serbia. “I hope that the citizens of Serbia will see the immense value in hosting EXPO 2027. By bringing the world together, fostering dialogue, and contributing to a brighter future, this event will bring lasting benefits to our country and our people.”
Expressing his disappointment with some individuals who oppose the event, Borovčanin emphasized the rarity of this opportunity for Serbia. He encouraged the public to familiarize themselves with the history of EXPO and the potential advantages it could bring to the nation and the entire region, including economic growth, improved international relations, tourism, and new collaborations.
“Serbia is the first and only country in the Western Balkans to secure the right to host EXPO, and we are determined to make the most of this chance. This event offers an unparalleled opportunity for development, work, reconciliation, new ideas, and dialogue for our country and the entire region,” concluded Dušan Borovčanin.
