The number of Serbian tourists visiting Spain increased by 25% in 2024, reflecting strong potential and growing interest, according to Blanka Perez, advisor at the Spanish Embassy and tourism counselor for the region. She highlighted that new direct flights from Belgrade to multiple Spanish cities, operated by Air Serbia and Wizz Air, have made travel easier and year-round.
Perez noted that Spain aims not just to increase tourist numbers but to promote year-round visits and diversify its tourism offerings. About half of Serbian visitors go to Catalonia due to many direct flights to Barcelona, but efforts are underway to encourage travel to other Spanish regions as well.
Spain promotes its extensive high-speed train network, allowing tourists to easily explore multiple destinations after arriving in major cities like Madrid or Barcelona. This is especially important for those interested in cultural tourism.
Perez recommended three inland regions to Serbian tourists: Castilla-La Mancha (famous for Cervantes and rich in history and gastronomy), Extremadura, and Castilla y León. She emphasized the unique experience offered by Spain’s chain of state-run Paradores hotels, located in historic buildings such as castles and monasteries, which also help preserve the country’s heritage.
Perez, impressed by Belgrade’s recent development and investment, sees Expo 2027 in Belgrade as a major opportunity to promote Spain and Serbia as attractive tourist destinations. The Expo’s slogan, “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All!”, aligns with Spain’s focus on sports tourism, a key part of its national strategy.
Spain views sports tourism broadly, including international sporting events, marathons, and cycling tourism, as a significant growth area. Expo 2027 will be a chance to showcase Spain as a leading sports tourism destination to the Serbian market.
Perez also serves as a tourism advisor for Croatia, Albania, North Macedonia, and Montenegro, based in Milan.
