Iran has officially confirmed its participation in Expo 2027 in Belgrade, the first international exhibition in the Western Balkans, under the theme “Game(s) for humanity: sport and music for all.” Iran is one of 119 countries confirmed to attend.
The year of the Expo will also mark 90 years of diplomatic relations between Iran and Serbia, characterized by regular official contacts and mutual support in international organizations. Danilo Jerinić, director of Expo 2027 Belgrade, welcomed Iran’s participation, highlighting the appeal of its ancient culture, dance, music, and sports.
Iranian traditional games include tavla (backgammon), alak dolak, haftsang, vasati, and qāyem bāshak, while regional dances and sports such as pahlavan, zurhane rituals, chovgan, equestrian sports, archery, and wrestling reflect the country’s cultural heritage. Notable Iranian athletes include Mehdi Taremi and legendary footballer Ali Daei.
Iran first participated in the 1851 World Exhibition in London and joined the International Bureau of Exhibitions (BIE) in 2002. At Expo 2015 in Milan, Iran received a silver award for pavilion design.
Expo 2027 Belgrade will run from May 15 to August 15, 2027, with over 120 countries expected and more than four million visitors projected during the 93-day event.
