Croatian oil pipeline operator, Janaf, has formally requested permission from the American sanctions authority to continue fulfilling its contract with Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), a company predominantly owned by Gazprom, which has been under international sanctions since January 10, Bloomberg reports.

Janaf Board member Vladislav Veselica confirmed in a phone interview from Zagreb that the company had officially approached U.S. authorities, requesting approval to transport oil to NIS through 2026. NIS is Janaf’s primary client, and the two companies currently have a contract for the transportation of 10 million tons of crude oil.

The full implementation of sanctions against NIS is scheduled for February 27, 2025. Until then, Janaf has an opportunity to make adjustments and take necessary measures to ensure a safe and uninterrupted oil supply to Serbia. According to a statement released by Janaf on January 13, the company is closely monitoring the situation and engaging with all relevant stakeholders.

While it is not yet possible to predict the full impact of U.S. sanctions on NIS or the consequences of these measures, Janaf remains committed to adapting to the situation and maintaining open communication with key parties involved.
