The project of screening, treatment and management of around billion tons of mining waste in Bor and surrounding areas will kick off on Thursday with the assistance of the Japanese government.

The project worth RSD 5.6 million will be carried out with the donation of the Japanese government and Serbia’s funds amounting to USD 800,000, said Zoran Stevanovic, executive director of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

The project, which is announced to last five years until 2020, will engage Serbian and Japanese experts and be managed by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy from Bor.

The goal is to use mining waste to the greatest extent possible in various industries, including the cement industry, while the residues would be refined and safely disposed, Stevanovic said.

He underlined that Japanese people have considerable experience and modern technology for the mining waste disposal, adding that they succeeded in making the most deteriorated areas into green spaces.

The largest mining basin in Serbia has been defined as a black spot on the country’s ecological map since 2002.
