Dušan Borovčanin has stepped down as director of Expo 2027, the company established by the Serbian government to organize the specialized international exhibition scheduled in Belgrade from May 15 to August 15, 2027, under the theme “Game(s) for humanity.” However, his resignation does not mean a complete departure — Borovčanin will remain involved as an advisor, focusing on communication with the International Bureau for Exhibitions and participating countries.
Although still listed as the sole legal representative in official registers, Borovčanin is expected to soon transfer this role to a successor. Sources indicate that Danilo Jerinić, the former operations director at Expo 2027, will be officially appointed director on August 1. Jerinić has recently appeared frequently in the media discussing the project.
Jerinić explained that the Expo is moving from planning and strategic preparation into an intensive implementation phase, requiring leadership focused on operational and on-site execution. He expressed confidence in his ability to successfully lead this next phase and complete the project.
Speculation about Borovčanin’s resignation includes the government’s desire to accelerate construction progress by appointing a more agile director. While Borovčanin had reported that work was progressing according to plan, the government may now seek a leader better suited for handling operational challenges and public dissent.
Resistance from parts of the public has grown, including a petition by the Move-change movement signed by nearly 120,000 citizens, calling for cancellation of the “small Expo” due to legal non-compliance, lack of transparency, and a significant expansion of the project area from 119 to 813 hectares.
