Longest tunnels in Serbia completed, but opening of highway section near Požega faces delays

The longest tunnels on Serbian territory between Pakovraće and Požega have been completed. However, multiple deadlines for finishing this relatively short section of the future highway to Montenegro have been missed.

The completion date has been postponed several times over recent years. Although the symbolic Vidovdan date (June 28) was previously expected for opening, recent statements from President Aleksandar Vučić indicate the highway section will now open “by the end of the month,” without specifying Vidovdan.

Vučić mentioned the opening depends on completing certain administrative paperwork, but did not specify the exact day.

Construction of the 30.9-kilometer section from Preljina to Požega began in spring 2019, with an original completion target by the end of 2021. The deadline has since been repeatedly pushed back. In January 2022, only the 12-kilometer segment from Preljina to Pakovraće was opened to traffic.

State officials have consistently insisted the Vidovdan deadline would be met for the remaining section, but that now appears uncertain.

Final works on the remaining section are ongoing, but no clear explanation about the paperwork delays has been provided.
