Representatives from the Ministry of Mining and Energy recently visited the site of the future main facility for the reversible hydroelectric power plant “Bistrica”, as well as locations where investigative works are underway related to the relocation of state roads 191 and 194, the Ministry announced.
During discussions with representatives from “Electricity of Serbia,” contractors, and expert supervisors, it was confirmed that the engineering and geological research—a critical step in preparing for the upcoming large-scale infrastructure work—is proceeding according to the planned schedule. At the same time, the need to accelerate the work was emphasized to avoid the impact of unfavorable weather conditions, which typically begin in the area in September. The importance of high-quality and safe execution of all investigative tasks, along with continuous supervision in compliance with applicable technical standards and regulations, was also strongly highlighted.
The “Bistrica” reversible hydroelectric power plant (RHPP) project, considered strategically important for Serbia, has completed its preliminary design along with the justification study, in accordance with the adopted spatial plan. Recently, the request for location permits for constructing the future power plant was submitted to the Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure. After obtaining these permits, the preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Study will be finalized, including a public inspection phase. The plan is to begin initial construction work on supporting infrastructure at the start of next year, according to Milan Aleksić, president of the Special Working Group for the Implementation of the Bistrica RHPP Construction Project.
The Bistrica RHPP will be Serbia’s first reversible power plant constructed in over four decades, representing the country’s largest new energy capacity of approximately 650 megawatts. The plant is also crucial for the stability and reliability of the national electric power system, providing energy balancing and storage capabilities—especially important as the share of renewable energy sources continues to grow.
