In 2020, renewable energy sources accounted for 37 percent of gross electricity consumption in the European Union, compared to 34 percent a year earlier, according to the EU’s Statistical Office (Eurostat).
The report shows that wind and hydropower together accounted for more than two-thirds of total electricity produced from renewable sources, or 36 and 33 percent, respectively.
“The remaining one third of electricity came from solar energy (14 percent), solid biofuels (eight percent) and other renewable sources (eight percent). Solar energy is the fastest growing source, because in 2008 it accounted for only one percent of the total electricity consumed in the EU, and in 2020 it will grow to 14 percent,” reads the analysis of Eurostat.
The data show that among the EU member states, more than 70 percent of the energy consumed from renewable sources was in Austria (78 percent) and Sweden (75 percent). Renewable electricity production was also high, accounting for more than half of the electricity consumed in Denmark (65 percent), Portugal (58 percent), Croatia and Latvia (both 53 percent).
On the other hand, it was recorded that the smallest share of electricity from renewable sources was in Malta (10 percent), Hungary and Cyprus (12 percent each), Luxembourg (14 percent) and the Czech Republic (15 percent).
Earlier Eurostat data also show that the share of renewable energy sources in the total energy produced in Serbia in 2020 was 26.3 percent. It is added that it is 4.86 percent more than in 2019, and it is very close to the set goal for that year, which was 27 percent.
Most of the energy produced from renewable sources in Serbia in 2020 comes from hydroelectric power plants – 859.8 kilotons of oil equivalent.
In second place is wind energy with 82.9 kilotons of oil equivalent, while solar energy – 1.1 kilotons of oil equivalent, Biznis reports.
