The 54.5-kilometer expressway from Šabac to Loznica officially opened today, in the presence of the Prime Minister of Serbia and the representative of the President of the Republic, Miloš Vučević. The Prime Minister and Vučević announced that the expressway would be open for traffic starting tomorrow at 9:00 AM, emphasizing that the travel time from Loznica to Belgrade will be reduced to just 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Vučević highlighted that this is the longest section ever opened at once, noting that while longer highways had been opened previously, they were done in multiple sections. “Tomorrow at 9:00, this segment will start operating. This is the longest section we’ve opened in one go. We’ve previously opened longer highways, but always in multiple phases, multiple sections, and multiple lots. For the first time, we’re opening 54.5 km in one go,” he said. He also mentioned that the entire Podrinje region will be better connected, making the area more accessible and safer for travel. He further stated that by the end of 2026, the Fruška Gora Corridor would be completed, connecting Ruma and Novi Sad.

The Šabac–Loznica expressway is part of the Ruma-Šabac-Loznica highway project. The commercial contract for the design and construction of the Ruma-Šabac highway and the Šabac–Loznica expressway was signed on November 19, 2019, with the Azerbaijani company “Azvirt.”

Construction of the road began on February 14, 2022, in the presence of President Aleksandar Vučić.

The total contract price for the works from Ruma to Loznica is 467.5 million euros, and from Šabac to Loznica, it is 247.5 million euros. The Ruma-Šabac highway, which spans 24.6 kilometers, was opened on October 14, 2023, in the presence of Vučić.

For the Šabac–Loznica expressway, the project includes 13 bridges, 17 small bridge culverts, 16 overpasses, and four grade-separated intersections in Majur, Slepčević, Petlovača, and Prnjavor. The longest bridge on the expressway is located in the village of Štitar, measuring 584 meters and situated at the eighth kilometer.

With the completion of this expressway, travel between Šabac and Loznica will take no more than half an hour, reducing the previous travel time from one hour.

The construction of the Ruma-Šabac highway and the Šabac–Loznica expressway is one of the top priorities for road transport, as it is crucial for the development and connectivity of the Srem, Mačva, and western Serbia regions, as well as for linking this part of Serbia with the neighboring region, particularly Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Once the Fruška Gora Corridor is completed, Loznica will also be connected by modern roads to Novi Sad.
