Over a quarter of Serbia’s workforce employed in public sector in Q1 2025

In the first quarter of 2025, Serbia had a total of 2.36 million employees, with more than a quarter of them, specifically 612,586, employed in the public sector, according to data from the Republic’s Statistical Office. The largest group of public sector workers was in health and social work, with 163,740 employees.

Education and culture followed closely with 147,987 employees, while state and provincial administration employed 132,472 workers. In public enterprises, 81,920 workers were employed in state-owned companies and 59,424 in local enterprises. The smallest number of employees was in local administration, which had 27,043 workers.
