Serbia’s planned transformation of the Port of Prahovo is becoming a test case for how inland logistics infrastructure must adapt to both industrial growth and climate risk.
The wider investment programme is valued at roughly €45.5 million and includes reconstruction, expanded terminal capacity, rail connectivity and facilities designed to accommodate vessels under difficult navigation conditions.
Prahovo occupies a strategically important location on the Danube close to Serbia’s eastern industrial and mining belt.
The port can support fertilisers, minerals, industrial products and other bulk cargo linked to the wider Bor, Majdanpek, Prahovo and eastern Serbia economy.
Its modernisation therefore has implications well beyond local transport.
Serbia is attempting to integrate mining, manufacturing, rail and river logistics more efficiently so that industrial exporters can reach European and Black Sea markets at lower cost.
But the design is also responding to increasingly unpredictable river conditions.
The 2026 drought has demonstrated how low water can reduce vessel loads, increase freight costs and disrupt supply chains.
Ports designed around historical river conditions may no longer provide sufficient resilience.
Prahovo therefore illustrates a wider infrastructure problem facing countries along the Danube.
Climate adaptation is becoming part of commercial logistics investment.
Deep-water access, multimodal connectivity and sufficient storage may increasingly determine whether inland industrial sites remain competitive during periods of extreme hydrology.
For Serbia, the Danube will remain one of its greatest natural transport advantages.
But exploiting that advantage will require significantly more investment than simply maintaining existing ports.
Prahovo is an early indication of what that next-generation infrastructure may look like.
