As part of a EUR 19.5 million project aimed at social and economic development in the Danube region in Serbia, 18 new tourism products have been created to date, with six infrastructure projects implemented in the field of tourism, a conference ahead of Danube Day was told on Thursday.
The project, financed by the European Union from IPA funds and implemented and co-funded by the Austrian Development Agency, began in 2012 and will last until the end of June 2016.
Oscar Benedict, the deputy head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, said that project results include the establishment of 22 new businesses and various training provided to 2,500 people.
It is an important project for Serbia in terms of furthering sustainable economic development and boosting activities in the Danube Basin, Benedict noted.
He said that 53 percent of tourists who come to Serbia visit the Danube region, and added that efforts must be made to ensure that they spend more while in Serbia and stay longer than the current average of three nights.
Serbia has been celebrating the Danube Day – June 29 – since 2002, whereby it has joined a tradition cherished in 14 European countries in the Danube Basin, Benedict said.
