The Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, held discussions with Lee Sung, the head of the Belgrade office of the South Korean company Hyundai Engineering, regarding the construction of self-balancing solar power plants across Serbia. These plants will have a total capacity of one gigawatt and be equipped with advanced battery systems for energy storage.
Minister Đedović Handanović highlighted that the development of these solar power plants is one of the largest renewable energy projects in Europe and represents a significant milestone for the Serbian energy sector. The project is expected to increase the share of green energy in Serbia’s power system, which will have a positive impact on both the economy and citizens, while also improving the country’s energy supply security. With this project, Elektroprivreda Srbije will gain the largest renewable energy production capacity, further solidifying its role as a key producer of green energy.
In addition to the solar power plants, the project will also include modern battery systems, which will enhance the ability to balance Serbia’s power grid.
The minister mentioned that work on the planning and technical documentation is currently underway and is expected to be completed within the specified timeline. She added that construction is expected to begin by the end of this year or the start of the next.
Minister Đedović Handanović also reminded that the contract for the construction of these solar plants was signed in October of the previous year, and that negotiations regarding financial conditions are still ongoing.
Lee Sung reaffirmed Hyundai Engineering’s commitment to this strategic project, emphasizing its importance for the development of renewable energy and strengthening Serbia’s energy stability.
