Serbia and JICA discuss financing for Bistrica reversible hydropower plant

Serbian Finance Minister Siniša Mali met with Toyama Kei, Director General for the Middle East and Europe at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to discuss potential financing for the construction of the reversible hydroelectric power plant “Bistrica”.

Mali stated that JICA is interested in partnering with Serbia to support the country’s strategic goal of increasing investment in renewable energy, emphasizing that energy stability remains a national priority.

He highlighted that President Aleksandar Vučić’s recent visit to Japan reaffirmed strong bilateral ties, which will be further strengthened through major joint projects like this one. Mali also presented Serbia’s key macroeconomic indicators and ongoing development projects in preparation for EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, noting that Serbia is a reliable partner open to cooperation and appreciative of JICA’s commitment to investing in the country.
