Carrefour set to enter Serbian market amid Balkans expansion plans

The French retail giant Carrefour is making its way into the Serbian market through its Greek branch. Following the recent opening of its first supermarkets in Bulgaria earlier this year, Carrefour is now poised for significant expansion throughout the Balkans.

Retail and More, Carrefour’s exclusive partner in Greece, has established a branch in Serbia. After signing a contract with the French group, the Greek company initially sought a local partner. However, when that did not materialize, they began negotiations for acquiring an existing well-known chain in Serbia.

These negotiations are reportedly in the final stages, and Carrefour is expected to launch its operations in Serbia within the next year. There are also unconfirmed reports that discussions are underway regarding a potential acquisition in Bulgaria.

As part of a previous agreement, Retail and More plans to rebrand existing stores such as Parkmart and ALDO into Carrefour locations in Bulgaria. The group, which is affiliated with the Greek AVE conglomerate, holds the rights to operate Carrefour stores across several markets, including Greece, Cyprus, Serbia, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, and Montenegro.

Carrefour’s entry into Serbia is anticipated to enhance competition in the retail sector and offer consumers more shopping options.
