Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić emphasized Serbia’s desire to enhance cooperation with the United Kingdom and British companies during his speech at the opening of the conference on trade between the UK and the Western Balkans. He described the UK as a crucial political partner for Serbia, underscoring its global influence as the world’s sixth-largest economy.

Vučić discussed the importance of closer ties not just in trade, but in various sectors including services, tourism, and social activities. He highlighted that past successful projects, such as financing the Moravian Corridor, showcased the efficiency and reliability of UK-based companies like “UK Finance,” which he commended for its ability to execute critical projects swiftly and effectively.

The President also stressed the need for regional cooperation in the Western Balkans, noting that removing barriers to trade and improving economic integration within the region would strengthen competitiveness, allowing the region to better access the UK market and attract investments.

Looking toward the future, Vučić emphasized the importance of reforms to facilitate EU integration by 2026, while preparing Serbia for Expo 2027. He described this as an opportunity to transform the country through infrastructure projects, education reform, and the development of innovation hubs. The President also noted that Serbia’s public finances are in strong shape, with debt levels well below EU and UK averages.

Vučić expressed his optimism about increasing trade, aiming for a significant rise in trade exchanges between Serbia and the UK, currently valued at 2.1 billion dollars, with hopes of tripling that figure in the coming years. He invited UK investors to explore opportunities in Serbia, while also encouraging Serbian businesses to look for opportunities in the UK market.

In closing, Vučić highlighted the upcoming Wine Fair, where the UK will be the second-largest represented country, and expressed his belief in the growing potential of Serbia-UK economic relations.
