Serbia’s Trade Minister, Tomislav Momirović, emphasized the critical role of mining in the nation’s economic development during his visit to the Rudnik flotation and pit circle on Mount Rudnik, near Gornji Milanovac. According to the Ministry of Trade, Momirović highlighted that Serbia’s rich geology and strategic geographical location present a significant opportunity for economic advancement. He underscored the necessity of leveraging these natural resources to benefit both the economy and national interests, asserting that mining is essential for Serbia’s economic progress.
During his visit, Momirović toured the Rudnik mine, which has been successfully operated by Contango for the past 20 years. The mine, situated in the heart of Šumadija, has a history of over 2,000 years of ore extraction, including lead, zinc, copper and silver. Currently, the mine employs 450 workers, providing them with beneficial working conditions and ensuring safety in their challenging roles. The wages earned by these workers not only support their families but also contribute to broader economic value, which helps improve salaries for public sector professionals such as doctors, teachers, police officers, and soldiers.
Momirović commended the company for its significant investments in modernizing mining processes and in the development and education of its employees. He noted that young engineers from Gornji Milanovac and Čačak are now employed at the mine, providing them with local opportunities and encouraging them to remain in their home regions.
He concluded by reaffirming the commitment to high standards of environmental protection in all mining activities, reflecting the industry’s responsibility towards sustainable practices.
