At the recent session of the Executive Committee of the International Bureau of Exhibitions in Paris, the dossier for recognizing the Specialized Exhibition “EXPO 2027” was unanimously adopted. Dušan Borovčanin, director of “EXPO 2027,” confirmed to RTS that the construction project, overseen by the Construction Directorate of Serbia, is progressing on schedule without issues.

Following the adoption of the dossier, the final confirmation is expected from the General Assembly of the International Bureau in November, which will enable invitations to participating countries and ticket sales to commence. Borovčanin expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting that this was a significant step toward realizing the EXPO.

“Our team has accomplished a historic feat for our country,” Borovčanin stated, highlighting the extensive work involved in developing the Expo’s legal, commercial, and programmatic frameworks. In November, the committee’s report will be presented at the General Assembly, leading to invitations for countries to participate.

The invitation process will be conducted at the highest governmental levels, with Serbia’s President or Government expected to be involved. Borovčanin emphasized that organizing the exhibition will involve signing contracts with participating countries, a process that will extend throughout next year and into 2026.

Japan’s experience in hosting world exhibitions is particularly valuable, according to Borovčanin. He mentioned recent discussions with the Secretary General of the 2005 World EXPO, emphasizing the importance of learning from past organizers. This will be the first time an Expo is held in the Western Balkans, making these insights crucial.

The director also noted interest from Saudi Arabia, which will host a major Expo in 2030. Conversations in Paris with organizers from the upcoming World EXPO in Osaka focused on collaboration, especially given that Serbia’s Expo will center on themes related to games, music, and sports.

Borovčanin stressed that the EXPO is a collaborative international effort, likening it to the Olympic Games with participation from over 180 countries. The International Bureau for Exhibitions has a longstanding tradition, submitting reports every two months to showcase progress.
