Serbia advances hydropower project with Japanese International Cooperation Agency on “Bistrica” reversible hydropower plant

The Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, met with a delegation from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to discuss collaboration on the “Bistrica” reversible hydropower plant (RHE) project.

According to the announcement, Đedović Handanović revealed that the preparatory works for the project are set to begin in 2026.

She emphasized that key preparatory steps for the RHE “Bistrica” project had already been completed this year, including the Conceptual Project, Justification Study, and a draft Environmental Impact Study. Additionally, the Spatial Plan for the Special Purpose Area was adopted.

The JICA team, which is currently evaluating the project, will remain in Serbia for a month, with a planned site visit to the location near Nova Varoš, where the future hydroelectric plant will be constructed, scheduled for next week.
