Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) has announced that one unit of the reversible hydroelectric power plant (RHPP) “Bajina Bašta” is back in operation following the completion of major overhaul works. This development adds “another 300 megawatts to the grid,” enhancing the country’s energy security amid an unprecedented heatwave affecting Serbia.
Dušan Živković, General Director of EPS, highlighted the significance of this return, stating, “Restoring one generator at Bajina Bašta will not only increase production but also optimize our production capacities to provide additional electricity under the most favorable conditions.”
Simultaneously, work is underway on the revitalization of the R1 unit at the plant. “The revitalization of our sole reversible hydroelectric power plant began after 42 years of operation and could not be postponed further,” Živković noted. The first unit’s revitalization is expected to be completed by the end of November, with the second unit’s revitalization planned for next year.
In the thermal sector, repair activities are progressing as scheduled. Block A6 at the TENT facility is set to come online next week, while the overhaul of block A1 in Kostolac will be completed in early August. Prior to the start of the heating season, the overhauls of TENT A2 and block B1 in Kostolac are also expected to be finished.
To address the increased energy demand during the record summer consumption, EPS is securing additional energy on the market at significantly lower prices compared to stock exchange rates, the company reported.
