The new Sava Bridge in Belgrade is set to be fully redesigned with pedestrians and cyclists in mind, offering a more accessible and safer route for all traffic. The bridge will feature a total of six lanes—four for cars and two for trams—ensuring smoother flow of both motor and public transport, while also providing ample space for non-motorized commuters.
According to SiniÅ¡a Mali, Serbia’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the new bridge will be far superior to the old one in terms of safety, functionality, and aesthetics. The updated design aims to improve traffic conditions in Belgrade, providing a more efficient and visually pleasing structure for the citizens of both the capital and the country.
Stretching 420 meters in length, the new Sava Bridge will be supported by six pillars. Its width will be 38 meters, with the pedestrian and cyclist areas extending to 42 meters at designated viewpoints. The tram lanes will be located centrally, while the road traffic will be split into two lanes in each direction, each with a width of 6.5 meters.
Additionally, dedicated pedestrian and bike paths will be installed on both sides of the bridge, fully accommodating walking and cycling traffic. This will ensure safe and seamless access for everyone, particularly promoting eco-friendly and active transport options.
The construction of the new bridge is expected to reduce traffic on other main routes, including the Branko Bridge (with a 8% reduction in passengers), the Gazela Bridge (5%), and the Ada Bridge (4%). Furthermore, the project includes the construction of a new tunnel connecting the Faculty of Economics to Despot Stefan Boulevard. This tunnel is expected to ease congestion in Belgrade’s city center by 17% and also help decrease pollution levels.
With two lanes in each direction, the tunnel will span approximately two kilometers and marks the first new tunnel construction in Belgrade in over fifty years.
The new Sava Bridge is slated for completion by the end of 2026, promising to enhance Belgrade’s infrastructure and traffic flow, benefiting residents and visitors alike.
