In the area surrounding the Niš villages of Gornja Studena and Bancarevo, situated on the slopes of Suva Planina, the Australian company Apollo Mineral Limited has commenced drilling to explore potential copper and silver deposits. Close by is the Studena spring, a vital water source for the city of Niš. The Ministry of Mining and Energy has assured that all research and activities will adhere to the guidelines set by the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia.
According to Apollo Mineral’s official website, drilling has started at a depth of 600 meters at the Studena site, part of their “Belgrade Copper Project.” The company highlights that this area has historically shown signs of copper, with minor underground mining activities dating back to the early 20th century. One of the historical mine entrances is reportedly about 50 meters deep, featuring two levels that extend a total of 85 meters.
The Ministry of Mining and Energy has confirmed to Južne Vesti that geological exploration has been authorized for the stretch between Gornja Studena and Bancarevo by Edelweiss Mineral Exploration, a company registered in Serbia by Apollo Serbia Limited, since 2021.
When inquired whether the proximity of the site to the Studena water source, which serves the residents of Niš, was taken into consideration during the permit issuance, the Ministry emphasized that research can only proceed in compliance with the conditions outlined by the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia and the appropriate authorities responsible for the protection of cultural monuments.
