The project for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Veliko Selo in Belgrade will be entrusted to the consortium “Suez International SAS” and “Vinci Construction Grands Projets”.

Minister of Finance Siniša Mali signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Serbia and the consortium consisting of “Suez International SAS” and “Vinci Construction Grands Projets” regarding the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant in Veliko Selo, announced is from the Ministry.

On that occasion, Mali emphasized that Serbia is implementing many very important projects with French companies, such as the construction of the subway in Belgrade, the construction of a waste processing plant in Vinča, and they are also partners at Belgrade’s “Nikola Tesla” airport.

“We are satisfied with the cooperation with French companies, but it is also important to go further and find some new projects.” We need to keep up with new technologies and I am glad to hear that many French companies are interested in investing in that area,” said Minister Mali.

Belgrade is the only capital city in Europe that does not have a wastewater treatment system and discharges all its wastewater into the Sava and Danube rivers.

That problem should be solved by building a wastewater treatment plant, which government representatives have been announcing for years.

In February 2022, the Serbian Parliament adopted a law on the confirmation of a loan of 203.7 million euros that was insured by the Chinese state-owned company China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation, while the banks BNP Paribas and Unicredit Bank were listed as lenders.

These funds are intended for financing the first phase of the project of collection and purification of waste water of the central sewage system of the City of Belgrade.

The first phase of the construction of the plant includes the construction of the infrastructure, the new sewage pumping station Ušće – Nova, and the reconstruction of the Mostar pumping station.

The contractual agreement itself for the project of collecting and purifying wastewater from the central sewage system of the City of Belgrade was signed in 2020.

The agreements were signed between the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure and the company “China Machinery Engineering Corporation” (CMEC) in Serbia and PUK “Belgrade water supply and sewerage”.

The second phase of the project involves the construction of the factory itself. The first and largest factory of the central sewage system of Belgrade should be built in Veliko Selo (Palilula municipality) on an area of about 100 hectares.
