Serbia hopes to kickstart a second phase of the construction of its data centre in Kragujevac by the end of next year, prime minister Ana Brnabic has said.

“We plan to open our data centrŠµ in June 2020, but perhaps by the end of 2020 we will have the opportunity to announce the second phase of the data centre construction because the first phase will be completely full,” Brnabic said on Saturday in a video file posted on the website of public broadcaster RTS.

The government has invited Chinese telecommunications equipment and services company Huawei to establish its data hub for Southeast Europe at the Kragujevac data centre, Brnabic said.

“They do not have a data centre for Southeast Europe. So, we expect to continue negotiations so that they can set up their data storage centre for Southeast Europe in Serbia,” Brnabic noted.

Serbia is investing 30 million euro ($33.1 million) in the construction of the data centre in Kragujevac which will spread on an area of four hectares and will have a few hundred employees.
