Serbia lags in online learning, but companies drive workforce development

While Europe sees strong growth in online education, Serbia lags behind. In 2024, only 11% of Serbian citizens took an online course, compared to 18% in the EU. About 40% of employees expressed a desire to improve their skills but cited family responsibilities, work schedules, or course costs as obstacles.

On the employer side, 82% of companies highlight education and professional development as a benefit, especially in medium and large firms employing highly skilled workers. This creates an opportunity for online courses to bridge employee aspirations and company support.

Flexible online learning—accessible from home or office, on mobile devices, and at lower cost—directly addresses the barriers employees face. Platforms like Krojačeva School already serve over 30,000 active learners, with 86% of company purchases being annual licenses, showing a long-term commitment to employee development.

Although Serbia trails behind Europe in individual online learning, companies’ investment in employee education signals that knowledge is increasingly valued. Aligning employee interest with employer support could make online education a key driver of workforce development in the coming years.
