The Government of Serbia has signed a contract worth 4.6 billion dinars (approximately 39.3 million EUR) for the rehabilitation, adaptation and reconstruction of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Clinical Center of Serbia. Work on the project is expected to commence within the next ten days.
The clinic, located on Višegradska Street, was originally constructed between 1946 and 1963. According to Health Minister Zlatibor Lončar, since then, the facility has only been maintained to remain operational. He emphasized that the two-year duration of the renovation is a small investment compared to the decades of improved service it will provide.
The renovation will be carried out in phases to ensure that patient care continues uninterrupted. Those with scheduled procedures at the clinic are advised not to worry, as efforts will be made to minimize any inconvenience.
The Ministry of Health clarified that the clinic will remain functional throughout the reconstruction. While the contractor works on specific sections, those areas will be closed off, but other parts of the clinic will continue to operate normally.
Professor Aleksandar Stefanović, director of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics, explained that the renovation will include updating operating rooms and patient wards for pregnant women. He highlighted the importance of the project, noting a steady increase in surgical procedures at the clinic, with nearly 9,000 operations performed last year, including 3,000 laparoscopic surgeries.
Currently, surgeries are conducted in seven operating rooms. The reconstruction will add two more: one fully equipped for laparoscopic surgeries and another dedicated to minor interventions and day surgeries.
Additionally, the clinic plans to expand its in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacities as part of the upgrade.
