The French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are providing €300 million in loans to fund seven regional waste management centers in Serbia, helping 47 local municipalities address the problem of unsanitary landfills.
Serbia’s Minister of Environmental Protection, Sara Pavkov, met today with representatives from AFD to discuss the progress and implementation of these regional center projects. The initiatives include building sanitary landfills, mechanical-biological waste treatment facilities, and infrastructure for leachate treatment, biogas processing, recycling, and composting. The goal is to minimize the volume of waste sent to landfills and extend their operational lifespan.
“For the first time in Serbia, we will build mechanical-biological treatment plants, marking a new phase and higher standards in environmental policy. These plants will maximize the separation of recyclable materials to reduce the amount of waste deposited in sanitary landfills, thereby prolonging their lifespan. Plans also include constructing leachate treatment plants, biogas collection and processing facilities, as well as building or renovating transfer stations, recycling yards, and composting sites,” Pavkov explained.
