A delegation from “Belgrade Metro and Train”, led by Director Andreja Mladenović, met in Beijing with representatives of PowerChina, the main contractor for Belgrade Metro Line 1. The company confirmed that two tunnel boring machines (TBMs), known as “critics,” will arrive in Serbia in the second half of 2026, marking the start of the most complex and crucial phase of metro construction.
Three strategic contracts worth around €1 billion have been signed with PowerChina. One contract covers the construction of the Makiš Depot, including the operational control center and related facilities, while metro construction is divided into three lots. Two of these lots have already been signed, with negotiations ongoing for the third.
The division into lots ensures smooth execution of all activities for Phase 1 of Line 1, including TBM production and delivery, excavation, tunnel and station construction, and supporting infrastructure.
Zang Haiku, President of PowerChina, stated that the company has built metro systems in over 40 cities worldwide and considers the Belgrade Metro a priority and a major challenge to showcase their expertise in Europe.
The project aims for Belgrade to have an efficient, safe, and modern metro system by the end of 2030.
