Serbian economy maintains profitability and growth in 2024

The Serbian economy maintained a positive trend in 2024, operating profitably for the tenth consecutive year with increased financial capacity and preserved financial stability. By the end of the year, 112,670 companies employed approximately 1.3 million workers.

The economy recorded a positive net result of about 866 billion dinars, which is 9.9 percent lower compared to the previous year. Out of all companies, 68,387 reported a net profit totaling 1,238 billion dinars, while 31,069 companies experienced a net loss of 372 billion dinars. Additionally, 13,214 companies did not show any net result.

Total revenues increased by 5.3 percent, reaching around 20,087 billion dinars, while total expenditures rose by six percent to over 18,988 billion dinars. Every sector posted a positive net result, with the wholesale and retail trade sector contributing nearly a quarter of the total profit, approximately 208 billion dinars. The processing industry recorded a profit of about 176 billion dinars, mining generated roughly 144 billion dinars, and the construction industry earned about 105 billion dinars. The electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning sector also showed strong profitability with a profit of around 25 billion dinars.

Large enterprises were the most profitable, accumulating a total profit of 439 billion dinars. Business assets engaged totaled approximately 25,559 billion dinars, a 7.9 percent increase from the previous year, while capital increased by 6.8 percent to 11,473 billion dinars.

The total debt of the economy grew by 7.8 percent to about 15,714 billion dinars. Own sources of financing also rose by 7.9 percent, reaching approximately 9,779 billion dinars. Despite these positive indicators, companies recorded a total loss of 4,211 billion dinars, which is three percent higher than the previous year. About 1,627 billion dinars of this loss exceeded the amount of capital.

The largest share of total losses, 27.1 percent, was accumulated in the processing industry sector, amounting to 1,142 billion dinars. This was followed by the wholesale and retail trade sector with losses of 503 billion dinars and the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning sector with losses of 471 billion dinars.

The annual report on business operations in 2024 includes an analysis of the business performance and financial position of 112,670 companies, 1,566 institutions, and 118,862 entrepreneurs. It is based on preliminary data from regular annual financial and statistical reports submitted for 2024, as well as final aggregated data from 2023.
