Serbian internet penetration rate up 7% y/y to 62.8%

In Serbia, 63.2 percent of households own a PC, which is 3.3 percent more than last year, while 62.8 percent have an internet connection, or 7 percent more than in 2013, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (RSIS), report Tanjug and Beta. The survey showed that 38.7 percent of households have a laptop, up 7.1 percent year on year, and 99 percent have a TV set while 90.6 percent have a mobile phone.

More than 2.81 million people use the internet daily or practically daily, which is around 450,000 more than last year, while over 5 million Serbians use a mobile phone, which is 110,000 more than in 2013. For internet access, 80.5 percent used PCs (down 0.4% y/y), 61 percent mobile phones (+14.9% y/y), while 57 percent used laptops.

Over 1.3 million people used electronic services run by public administrative bodies, while 1.16 million purchased goods or services via the internet. Of total households with internet access, 54.6 percent opted for an ADSL connection, 35.3 percent for cable internet, while 0.7 percent used a dial-up modem.

An estimated 55.1 percent of households in Serbia have a broadband internet connection (+11.7% y/y). Among those polled, 29.7 percent had never used a PC, while 33.1 percent had never accessed the internet. Among those aged 16-24 years, 95.6 percent have an account on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. The survey polled 2,400 households and 2,400 individuals.
