Serbian operators call for joint efforts to avert price hike

Serbian mobile operators have called for joint efforts to avert an increase in national mobile charges after roaming cuts, reports Beta. Sources from Vip Mobile said that mobile roaming services are not used by everyone in Serbia or elsewhere in the region, which is why joint efforts are needed to avert what has happened in most EU countries, where lowering roaming charges has been followed by an increase in national mobile telephony prices.

A consensus is needed on a business model based on which the terms and pace of reductions in roaming charges in the region is determined, and it is necessary to assess the effects of new measures on the telecoms market in the region. If all interests are taken into account, roaming charges in the region could be decreased over the next three years, while some lowering could be expected in the next holiday season.

Telenor sources said the company is constantly calling for the predictability of the regulatory framework in Serbia and that it would like to be included in the agreement’s implementation from the beginning. Representatives of Telekom Srbija say that a complete abolition of roaming charges in the region could entail the formation of a single telecoms market, which is a very complex issue.
