Serbia’s businesses are only halfway toward fully applying digital tools, according to the Digital Development Index of Serbia, created by the Register of National Internet Domains of Serbia (RNIDS) and Plum Mark. Despite widespread discussions on digitization, over 200,000 business entities in Serbia, including 190,000 entrepreneurs and 25,000 companies, still lack their own websites, representing about 45% of the economy.
The Digital Development Index, available on the indeks.srb portal, offers a clear picture of how Serbian companies utilize digital tools. The index is based on objective data about businesses’ online presence, including website usage, email communication, social media engagement, and online payments.
Key findings from the index reveal that many companies underuse their websites, primarily using them for product/service presentation rather than as a communication or sales tool. Only 24% of businesses have chat software on their website, and many rely on Facebook for communication, with only 31% using LinkedIn, a critical platform for business networking.
The overall score of Serbia’s economy in the Digital Development Index stands at 46.97 out of 100. Businesses that have been operating for 3-10 years, manufacturing companies, and those with international operations score higher than the average. Conversely, newer businesses, service-oriented companies, and entrepreneurs tend to score lower.
The Digital Development Index allows businesses to assess their own digital maturity, compare it with similar companies, and access educational resources to improve their digital capabilities. This initiative aims to track progress and promote further digitalization across the country.
