Dušan Nikezić, MP and vice-president of the Freedom and Justice Party, stated that fuel prices in Serbia remain at the same level as in May 2022, despite the price of oil falling by over 40 percent in the last three years, and by 10 percent in just the last week. In a written statement, Nikezić emphasized that Serbian citizens have been paying the highest fuel prices in the region for years, even though Serbia has its own oil reserves and a modern refinery. He argued that the primary reason for this is the significant income generated by the state from fuel sales.
Nikezić pointed out that out of the 196 dinars per liter of diesel, 107.5 dinars (or 55 percent) goes to the state, leaving only 88.5 dinars to cover the cost of crude oil, processing, transport, retail, and other related expenses.
He further criticized the situation, claiming that citizens are being exploited every time they fill up their vehicles. He lamented that the money taken from fuel sales does not go towards essential sectors like education, but instead funds entities like the tabloid Informer, as well as luxury villas and parking lots. However, he expressed hope that this situation would not continue much longer.
