The United Trade Unions of Serbia “Sloga” has proposed the creation of a new Ministry for Price Control to the Government of Serbia. This ministry would be tasked with overseeing market conditions, combating cartels, regulating uncontrolled price increases, and protecting citizens’ access to essential goods and services.
“Sloga” pointed to Spain as a model, where the Ministry of Consumer Affairs (Ministerio de Consumo) is responsible for price monitoring and consumer protection. According to the union, Spain’s example demonstrates that a specialized institution can effectively address market abuse, safeguard citizens from excessive price hikes, and enhance regulatory oversight of retail chains and monopolistic practices.
The union emphasized that many existing ministries in Serbia lack a clearly defined role in addressing the daily challenges faced by citizens, especially when it comes to rising prices of food, energy, and essential services.
“For this reason, we are proposing the establishment of the Ministry for Price Control—a dedicated and accountable institution with the authority and capability to respond swiftly and effectively,” said Željko Veselinović, president of the United Trade Unions of Serbia “Sloga”.
He added that the creation of such a ministry would send a strong message that the government is taking citizens’ concerns seriously and is committed to restoring order in the marketplace, particularly in the area of retail and distribution of basic necessities.
