Staff shortage hampers Serbia’s software industry growth

Serbia has the potential to increase its annual software exports to $2 billion (1.7 billion euro) a year from $800 million in 2016, but the shortage of staff is hampering growth, Branko Milutinovic, CEO of Serbian software developer Nordeus, has said.

The biggest obstacles before the Serbian software industry is the lack of awareness of its possibilities and the shortage of qualified workforce, Milutinovic said in a video file posted on the website of Serbian news agency Tanjug on Saturday.

Nordeus has 40 expats in its staff in Belgrade because it cannot find qualified employees in Serbia despite the high unemployment rate among young people.

“This is a paradox. Somebody should seriously analyse the situation and adapt the education system to the needs of the future,” Milutinovic said.

The number of software development graduates in Serbia stands at around 2,000 a year, while the industry needs at least 30,000, he added.

Nordeus is a Belgrade-based independent mobile games developer with a workforce of about 160 employees. The company’s debut game is Top Eleven Football Manager, a free-to-play social football management simulation game.
