Stellantis unveils hybrid Fiat Grande Panda, shifting strategy amidst leadership changes

At the Brussels Motor Show, Stellantis revealed a hybrid version of the Fiat Grande Panda, signaling a shift in strategy as the company departs from its initial electric vehicle-centric approach. This new direction follows the resignation of Carlos Tavares, Stellantis’ former CEO, after disagreements with the company’s leadership. While Tavares’ departure includes a substantial severance package, the focus has shifted to meeting market demand with the hybrid “Panda” taking precedence over the electric version, set to be produced in Kragujevac.

The hybrid Fiat Grande Panda is available for pre-order in Belgium, with prices starting at €18,890 for the base “Pop” model and topping out at €23,400 for the “La Prima” version. Sales will begin in Italy on January 28, and deliveries are expected in February. The hybrid model, assembled at Fiat’s factory near Naples, reflects a strategy rooted in Italian consumer preferences, where full electric mobility adoption is still lagging behind.

The decision to launch the hybrid version first follows the success of the Fiat 600 hybrid, which saw increased sales. Stellantis, having learned from this experience, opted to prioritize the hybrid model for the “Fiat Grande Panda.” Gaetano Torell, head of Fiat and Abarth’s European division, affirmed this strategy, emphasizing the lessons learned from their earlier missteps. As part of the relaunch of the Fiat brand, the “Grande Panda” is expected to offer versatility akin to the iconic Fiat 500.

With potential plans for a 4×4 version and a possible internal combustion engine variant, the “Grande Panda” could become a versatile offering in Fiat’s expanded lineup. The hybrid model features a 1.2-liter gasoline engine paired with a 48-volt electrical system and an eDCT transmission, paving the way for future electric and alternative powertrain options.
