We need to continue bringing small and mid-size companies so as to ensure opening of new jobs in all parts of the country, Tadic said.

This is the only way to resolve foreign exchange deficit, which constitutes the chronic decease of the Serbian economy, because Fiat will be manufacturing several hundred thousand cars and the figure might even reach 300.000, depending on the end of the economic crisis, Tadic said in a statement for Tanjug after visiting a plant assembling the trial series of Fiat’s new model.

The Serbian president said that bringing major companies to Serbia will take considerable time and recalled that it took five years to bring Fiat and Benetton to the country.

Tadic said that neither (former minister of economy and regional development Mladjan) Dinkic, nor (Prime Minister Mirko) Cvetkovic, not even himself as the president, should deceive Serbian citizens that they brought Fiat to Serbia on their own, because the only way Serbia can resolve problems is by teamwork. Only teamwork and atmosphere, which means that everyone backed one project, can ensure competitiveness of companies and countries in difficult times, Tadic noted.

According to him, Fiat’s arrival in Serbia brought new technology and employees will get a chance to contest with the best competition from the entire world.

The factory (in Kragujevac) is a piece of art in terms of robotisation, computerisation and the high level of production organisation, Tadic said and added that this is where Serbia achieved new values, that is, improvement of our industry’s quality.

Expressing satisfaction that Fiat’s new model from Serbia would be exported to the U.S. market as well, Tadic said that the Yugo Florida or Yugo America can now become a realistic goal.

Tadic expressed belief that the beginning of mass car production in Kragujevac will be just the first step and that Serbian economy will achieve new acceleration in the years to come.

We operate very well in certain segments, while in others we have certain flaws and this should not be kept secret from the citizens, Tadic said but he added that the hopes such manner of operation and tangible actions such as the ones with Fiat and BOSS can pull the country out from the very deep economic crisis which has been present for decades, Tadic concluded.

Largest greenfield investment in 20 years that of Fiat

Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic  said that the importance of Fiat’s investment in Serbia is exceptional not only because of its amount, but also because it has helped to attract a number of other car parts producers.

Following a presentation of a trial series of Fiat’s new car model in Serbia, Cvetkovic told Tanjug news agency, that Fiat’s investment is important because cars made in Serbia will now once again be driven on roads worldwide.

Fiat’s investment is the largest Greenfield investment in Serbia in the past 20 years, the Prime Minister underlined, reiterating its importance in the sense of an entire cluster of other car parts producers who are all interconnected.

He said that for Serbia’s economy this will mean exports worth €1.5–2 billion when the production capacity increases, but also a significant way to reduce the current account deficit of Serbia’s balance of payment.

Cvetkovic underlined that during the tour of the factory he was impressed by the production plants, the degree of automation and the latest world technology applied there.
