The Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, announced that the construction of the flue gas desulfurization plant at the “Nikola Tesla B” Thermal Power Plant (TENT B) is progressing well, with over 96 percent of the construction work completed and all major equipment successfully installed.

The project, valued at approximately 220 million euros, will introduce cutting-edge technology for flue gas desulfurization on blocks B1 and B2. This will lead to a dramatic reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions—by as much as 30 times—as well as a significant decrease in dust particles, thereby greatly improving the air quality in Obrenovac, Belgrade, and the surrounding areas, Đedović Handanović stated.

She further highlighted that the desulfurization plant at TENT B will utilize the same advanced technology as the one implemented at TENT A, which successfully began trial operations in April last year.

Once the project is completed, it is expected that 90 percent of the largest thermal capacities of the Electric Power Company of Serbia will be equipped with high-level environmental protection measures. Additionally, the use of limestone as a by-product will also generate gypsum for the construction industry.
