The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a cooperation agreement with the City of Nis to finance the development of a sustainable public transport plan, which will enable the city to make strategic decisions about investing in its transport network, the bank said.
– Taking into account the existing habits of users, tendencies and strategic goals of the municipality, the plan will help to optimize investments in order to introduce a more efficient, cleaner, more comfortable and safer transport system. The expected benefits of technical assistance are the removal of freight traffic from the existing intercity railway corridor that passes through the city – according to the EIB.
Technical assistance is provided by Team Europe and the Joint Urban Financing Initiative, launched by the EIB and the French Development Agency (AFD) to support ambitious urban development projects.
– This technical assistance will enable the development of projects that will bring multiple benefits to people living or traveling in Nis, as well as economic benefits resulting from better connections within the city, as well as with the surrounding municipalities. At the same time, it will help Nis solve some of the challenges posed by urban development and climate change and thus improve the environment and living conditions – said Liljana Pavlova, EIB Vice President responsible for the Bank’s activities in the Western Balkans.
– Nis, as a city, is intensively expanding and developing rapidly. The frequency of traffic has also increased, so that the plan of sustainable city transport will enable us to harmonize the traffic network with the new investment cycle and strategic directions of the city of Nis – said the mayor of Nis, Dragana Sotirovski, eKapija reports.
